Cosmos SDK
The Cosmos SDK is a Go framework for building application-specific blockchains: sovereign networks whose state machine is purpose-built for one application, secured by the CometBFT consensus engine. Rather than embedding your logic in a general-purpose smart-contract VM, you compose a chain from modules — staking, governance, bank, and your own custom Go code — into a single compiled state machine.
Why it exists
General smart-contract platforms trade performance and safety for generality: every application competes for one shared execution environment. The app-chain thesis inverts that — give each application its own chain with dedicated blockspace, full control over fees and upgrades, and type-safe Go modules instead of sandboxed bytecode. The SDK is the toolkit that makes this practical without requiring every team to reimplement consensus plumbing.
Where it sits in the ecosystem
- CometBFT (formerly Tendermint Core) — the BFT consensus and networking layer beneath every SDK chain; the SDK is its canonical application layer, connected over ABCI.
- IBC — the inter-blockchain communication protocol; most chains built with the SDK speak it natively via the ibc-go module.
- The Interchain — Cosmos Hub, Osmosis, dYdX's app chain, and dozens of others are SDK applications; the framework is the de facto standard for sovereign L1s.
- Alternative stacks — CosmWasm adds sandboxed Rust contracts to SDK chains, bridging the two philosophies.
This documentation is independent analysis of the public repository, written for developers evaluating or building on the framework.
